So, how many of you have an email list? Perhaps you are intimidated by the idea of starting one? Or you don't know what to offer as a lead magnet, a freebie to get people to sign up?

Building an email list is one of the smartest moves you can make in online marketing, but it’s also one of the most neglected by beginners. Social media feels more exciting, blogs feel more creative, and ads feel faster.

Email, by comparison, doesn’t always grab attention. Yet email is where the highest returns come from. It’s the only channel you fully control, and it’s where the strongest connections with your audience are built.

Without a list, every piece of traffic you attract is fleeting. People might read a blog post or watch a video once, but if you don’t capture their email, they’re gone—and you’re left starting over again tomorrow.

The most common mistake new marketers make is postponing list-building until later. They tell themselves they’ll “get around to it” after they’ve grown their blog or social channels.

But waiting only makes growth harder. By the time they finally start, they’ve missed months or even years of opportunities to capture leads. Another mistake is creating an opt-in without strategy.

They throw together a generic freebie—something like “Subscribe for updates”—and wonder why nobody signs up. Audiences are more discerning now. They expect real value in exchange for their email, and they won’t hand it over for anything less.

Another pitfall is overcomplicating the setup. Beginners often waste time comparing dozens of email service providers, stressing about which automation tool is best, or trying to design a perfect opt-in funnel.

The truth is, you don’t need advanced tools or a polished funnel to begin. What you need is a simple system: an enticing lead magnet, a service provider to capture and deliver emails, and a basic opt-in page to connect the two. Once that’s in place, you can improve and expand later.

The first days of list-building aren’t about creating massive sequences or running big campaigns. They’re about laying the foundation—understanding what kinds of lead magnets work in your niche, studying what competitors are already doing, choosing an email service provider you can actually use, drafting your own lead magnet idea, and setting up a simple page where people can sign up.

These steps might feel small, but together they create a system that captures attention and keeps it. With this foundation, every visitor you attract has the chance to become part of your long-term audience, and that’s what turns short bursts of traffic into lasting growth.

Next time we will look at How to Research Lead Magnet Styles That Work Best in Your Niche

I think an email list is a great way to bypass all of this search engine BS but if people aren’t finding my site, I have no chance of gaining any more subs.

I’m using Aweber for my guitar site but only have 13 subs. Early on, I reached out to some of my IG followers, separately, which was a pain. Created a lead magnet but haven’t added it to the site anywhere yet. Not getting enough traffic so how do you get more subs?

@gtrman15 hey Steve ... it always comes back to traffic, hey?

Since Google HCU23 everyone is flailing around not knowing where to go for traffic. Two avenues that I know are driving traffic atm are Reddit and Pinterest.

You could try growing your Reddit and at the top of every post, link to your email list sign up page.

Also have you had a look at Andy's Pinterest method?

They key is diversification. Choose one or two platforms and focus there, building content and authority. The eyeballs will come.

@gtrman15 Unfortunately, the days of expecting Google to bring you traffic are long gone. Now, its up to you to be proactive, and that means social media. And not just occasionally, but consistently, every day, preferably more than once per day.

Your niche is perfect for videos, and you have a lot of talent, so show it off! Maybe spend a morning at the weekend creating a batch of videos, a week's worth, and then schedule them out. You can use the same video on multiple platforms - Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok and YouTube.

And don't forget your subreddit, which you appear to have abandoned after only a couple of posts! Again, show up every day, post something engaging and be active in other groups. Music is a popular subject and people love to talk about it!

Ask nostalgia/remember when type questions to get some responses going:

  • Remember when hidden tracks showed up five minutes after a CD “ended”?

  • Who remembers rewinding cassettes with a pencil?

  • Remember when album booklets had lyrics, photos, and weird thank-you lists?

  • Who remembers arguing whether MiniDisc was the future for about six months?

  • Who remembers stitching patches on jackets until they were more thread than fabric?

  • Who remembers saving for weeks to buy a double album on payday?

  • Remember when record shops had listening posts with battered headphones?

  • Who remembers organizing shelves by spine color, not artist?

@diane All great ideas Diane. I’ll try to do better. Thanks

Haven’t abandoned the subreddit, it’s just I’m not sure if anyone is even seeing it. I’ll try and post more but I don’t understand exactly how people find stuff on Reddit. Maybe others get notifications of similar interests kind of thing? Idk

*I just posted something new on Reddit. 😎

It’s so strange how things changed so fast. When I started in feb 2024, the dream was to earn money from my laptop(incognito), and now I need to be everywhere including on camera. I remember years back when I took a break from Facebook. It felt so good. Now, for business purposes, I need to be on all of the socials. Drives me crazy!

One of my peers has the right idea, he has a blog and a YT channel. As far as I know, he’s not doing any other socials. He made $4300 last month and is trending upwards. Can’t tell if I keep choosing the wrong niches or do I just suck at this. lol

Hey Steve,

I can certainly offer some Reddit advice. In the year+ that I embraced it for Parasite SEO I went from Reddit newb to at least half knowing what makes Reddit tick 🙂 There's a huge amount of traffic over there. People usually stumble across posts in two ways:

  1. Search & keywords. Reddit has its own search bar, and Google indexes posts too (often prioritising Reddit in the SERP). If your titles match what users are typing, you’ll pull in lurkers. So actively target SEO keywords when posting. Use Keywords Everywhere for primary guidance, then GPT to flesh out LSI keywords.

  2. Feed + recommendations. Reddit’s algo feeds posts to users based on subs they’re already active in. So if your sub overlaps with their interests, you’ll start popping up.

As for growing your sub:

  • Regular posts. Doesn’t have to be daily, but consistency matters. A couple of solid threads a week beats random bursts.

  • Engagement seeds. Ask simple, open-ended questions. “What’s your biggest win this week?” or “What tool wasted your money?” prompts quick, easy replies.

Reddit is a bit like gardening. Hear me out! The seeds take time to settle in and germinate. Give it time. Growth on Reddit always looks slow until, suddenly, your sub’s on people’s front pages.

@rohanm Thanks Rohan, I will implement these tactics and see what happens. I’m excited about the one-page site! It’s got everything condensed into a short and sweet content along with a free blueprint. I just added an Aweber account for emails, which creates weekly newsletters that I can edit and send within minutes. You can also add links in there. I’ll keep y’all updated on my progress with it. 😃

@gtrman15 thanks Steve ... do let us know how you get on Smile
Re: the one page website. I just got my first lead from the OPW I mentioned on the other thread and I have done almost no work on it.

Literally set up the domain, used Namecheap's AI website builder (it's really quite good) and let the site sit there. No business info on there, no privacy or T&Cs 😯

I know what I'm working on this weekend!
