So, the .io domain, has become increasingly popular over the last few years, and many major websites use it.

But, a nasty surprise is coming!

Did you know it’s a country code top-level domain (ccTLD) related to a nation - the Chagos Islands.

The British government is giving up these islands, they will be handed over to the neighboring island country of Mauritius.

And when this happens, the International Standard for Organization (ISO) will remove the country code “IO” from its specification.

Once IO is removed, there will be no further new registrations with a .io domain.

It will also automatically begin the process of retiring existing ones.

Officially, .io—and countless websites—will disappear.

There is no indication as to when this will happen, but it's something to bear in mind!

Hey Diane ... thanks for the heads up!

I knew the islands were being handed back but had no idea about the TLD 😮

Tons of reviews I've posted on the Reddit relate to domains with this TLD ... nightmare! I wonder if they will be auto-redirected and I wonder more if affiliate tracking would survive the redirect!

@rohanm  I wonder if it's worth looking if the .com versions are available, and snapping them up if cheap enough, to sell to them at a vastly inflated price, lol.
