Okay, in reality, I’m writing this in response to a question posed by Nat on my last forum post, which was about creating a topical map and keyword research.
Nat asked whether it makes sense to do this if you’ve been hit by a Helpful Content Update (HCU), as most people who have been hit will have a sitewide classifier on their website.
I other words, they have suffered an algorithmic penalty.
There’s two ways to look at this, but first, it’s best to look how the majority of us create our websites.
Something I’ve mentioned before, which I know that some people were slightly perturbed at because they had “never heard this before”.
However, I will say that if you’ve always followed one specific training program you’re going to fall into one camp of the other.
What I said was, there are those who will claim, “Content is King”, whereas others will claim, “Backlinks are King”.
Realistically, you could turn round and say that from around 2018-2022, Content was indeed King.
How many of you from that “era” simply did keyword research, wrote an article, and by the time you had about 100+ articles on your website you typically found that your newly published articles were indexing more-or-less immediately, and you were also ranking in the top 3 results pretty much every time?
NOT HAPPENING SO OFTEN NOW, IS IT?
Plus, when we look at the search results fro pretty much every single keyword going it is high authority sites that are ranking, so essentially, you could say that now, “Backlinks are King”.
In truth, something you are hopefully starting to learn about this business is, DIVERSIFICATION IS KING.
Basically, if you’re putting all your eggs into one basket, you may “get away” with it for a while, but it will eventually catch up to you.
This is why so many people (myself included) are talking about losing 90% of their website traffic because of HCUs.
Realistically, 90% of their traffic (myself included) was coming from ONE SOURCE, i.e. Google.
This is why I say that there are TWO WAYS to look at HCU recovery.
Firstly, we have the form of recovery that is, “Let’s do what we think that Google wants and hopefully I will eventually recover”.
This would involve going through your Google Search Console stats for the ONE MONTH BEFORE YOU GOT HIT BY HCU.
Then, identify ALL the articles that were either not indexed or that were indexed, but were getting hardly any traffic (less than 30 visitors per month).
You would then either look to improve those articles in line with Google’s helpful content guidelines or you would simply delete those articles.
The hope is that once you’ve made all these changes, Google would return your rankings and traffic and you would “recover”.
This is what most people have been attempting and even what I initially suggested you do.
I still stand by this, if an article wasn;t getting traffic or wasn’t indexed BEFORE you got “hit” by an HCU, Google has ALREADY identified these articles as “unhelpful”.
BUT
Even if you do all of the above you will NOT have diversified your traffic sources, you have simply tried to SATISFY ONE TRAFFIC SOURCE, Google.
So, even if you do recover, and you get ALL your traffic back, and even more traffic, you are STILL getting 90% of your traffic from ONE SOURCE.
In other words, you’re still not “safe” and you could lose all your traffic again during a later algorithm update.
The second way to look at recovery is to diversify your traffic sources.
Google states in their spam guidelines that you should “write for people not for search engines”.
However, every single article we write we perform KEYWORD RESEARCH.
Why?
To RANK IN THE SEARCH ENGINES.
So, we are ALL essentially breaking Google’s spam policies by “performing keyword research”, yet it is widely accepted that this is the only way to rank in Google.
Now, the things that will make a difference is if the MAJORITY OF YOUR TRAFFIC (to the articles) was NOT coming from Google.
So, in answer to Nat’s actual questions, YES, still create your topical authority map and yes still do keyword research to write articles.
HOWEVER
The aim is to get traffic to those articles without SOLELY relying in ranking in Google.
As an example, and you’re about to discover just how much work this business requires, for every article that I write I will want to promote that article.
So, I write an article, I then use the import tool to place it on Medium.
I then rewrite it slightly and place it on Linkedin AS AN ARTICLE.
I then share the article to Facebook and Twitter/X.
I then create a long-form video rom the content and put this on YouTube.
I then break down that video into 5 “shorts” and upload those to YouTube and TikTok.
I create 5 Pinterest pins around my article and upload and link back to that article.
Finally, I get some “user-generated content” onto that article by requesting comments.
I do the above with EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE I EVER WRITE.
The aim here is to have keyword optimized articles on my website (in the hope of ranking in Google), but I am also getting lots of “social signals”, plus with time and consistency I’m starting to get followers and views and outbound clicks from all my “social” stuff.
This trickle of traffic from a VARIETY OF SOURCES signals to Google that my articles and my website are “popular” with various users around the internet.
If this continues for good amount of time, Google may consider “recovering” my website in the SERPs because of all these “signals” my website is getting from various users around the internet.
Suddenly my traffic blows uo because all of that content is ranking in Google, BUT, in reality, if I’ve been doing the above for a while (5-8 months <---- remember everyone always talks about 3-6 months, THIS is the "new" version), then possibly only 30-50% of my traffic is coming from Google, the rest is coming from these other sources.
As weird as it sounds
YOU ARE LIKELY TO GET MORE GOOGLE TRAFFIC IF YOU ARE GETTING TRAFFIC FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES
And this second form of “recovery” DOESN’T involve having to rewrite or delete my “unhelpful” content.
In fact, my “unhelpful” content may eventually be viewed (by Google) as “HELPFUL”, simply because I’m getting visitors (who are interacting, click links, watch video, scroll through article, time spent on article) to thise articles now.
Furthermore, all these incoming links are also increasing my authority, although these self-generated backlinks may not be as powerful, you can certainly get a website to a DA50 with JUST “self-generated foundational backlinks” (all the stuff I’ve mentioned above, and add to that adding your website to website directories, creating profile bios on high DA forums and UGC websites, and providing comments on RELEVANT niche-related websites).
So, “recovery” can either be, do what you THINK Google wants and hope they give you all your traffic back, BUT, realise that 90%+ of your traffic is STILL coming from only ONE SOURCE (so, if it happens again in a few years you’re back to where you started)
OR
Ignore Google and try to get traffic to your articles from other sources, and EVENTUALLY through doing this you are creating more backlinks, more social signals, and you’re sending people to your “unhelpful articles”, which eventually will make Google believe that they are actually “helpful”.
But, your website still needs articles for you to send vistors too, so it obviously makes sense to regularly update old articles every 6-12 months and to continue adding new articles too)
Look, if you want me to be honest, there needs to be one more type of “diversification”, and that is INCOME DIVERSIFICATION.
Two things that have come out from all these HCUs, Core, and Spam updates is:
Websites that have solely been created for affiliate marketing and/or ad revenue, and don’t have any type of authority, have been ANNIHILATED in the search engines over the last year (basically, what the vast majority have done here, me included with SOME websites, NOT ALL, and this is still what is mainly being taught, tut, tut).
There are even people who have had websites earning them money for 10, 12, 15 years, who have NEVER had any issues with Google previously, that have lost their traffic and income in either September 2023 or March 2024 or both.
Pretty much ALL of these websites didn’t diversify their INCOME.
Guess what types of “low authority” websites have done rally well over the last year? (haven't been "hit" and have actually improved in terms of rankings, traffic, and income)
Website that do affiliate marketing, website that do ad revenue income, BUT, they also have other forms of income diversification on their website.
These are mainly eCommerce (some people have just been adding fake ecommerce sections to their websites, have seen slight recoveries, BUT, they will eventually get hit again in the future, as it will be obvious to Google they have manipulated this… this could take a month, a few months, or they may even get away with it for years, but eventually they’ll get “hit” again) or websites that offer their own products, services, or courses.
(Honestly, if you just want to do affiliate marketing or ad revenue, the do parasite SEO on other platforms, because that ship has sailed for websites, the less your website looks like a real business, and the more obvious it is that your website is SOLELY for affiliate marketing and/or ad revenue, the less traction you're going to get in Google <----- you can keep your website as it is, say "sod Google", and diversify your traffic sources as above, while still adding content for your "external traffic sources visitors", PLUS, you must have an email newsletter, as this can eventually create your "own source of traffic")
In other words, these “low authority” websites that have done well over the last year LOOK LIKE REAL BUSINESSES.
They are NOT solely reliant on ONE traffic source and they are NOT solely reliant on ONE income stream.
And that is all I have to say about that.

Thank you for reading
Partha
P.s. I have not re-read this at all, for some reason Old Fluff thinks I make some of the best grammatical mistakes ever whenever I don't check over my work, lol (she's still giggling about my "sticks" and "thighs")
Hello Partha
Thank you so much. Great. Im actually doing all of those things.
I rewrite some very old articles which are very bad since when I started the website. I create pins, share on facebook, Medium and Linkedin and Flipboard. I also started YouTube. So let's see.
And you are right. It is a lot of work. When I had part time job, I wished to stop to have more time for blogging. Now I dont work and feel like blogging is taking most of my life.
But I'm dedicated to make it work 💪
Thank you 🙏
Nat
Great to get this raise up again posts, Partha!
I had a company in the meat world and this is exactly the same there. Very difficult to get "wide collections of customers" but very important to now trust on very few companies for 80% or more for your sale.
But one thing. I must admit that it has been difficult to delete posts on the side, traffic has fallen, etc. because of all the work and money I have put in it. Yes, I know, but!
I can copy/paste it into Word, but I decided to check if it is possible to keep it private, not for all.
As my traffic is gone after you know what, I can´t test it.
So I wanted to ask, do you believe it will be possible? I did it with a few, but I will probably do it with more.
I realized I found a gap in the market in one area, which could generate ad revenue through RSS.
Found it the hard way because I have myself been trying to get that infos.
However, it is incredibly difficult to get information about how to build a site with RSS in the main part of the website. However, it is a way to get more traffic.
Interesting stuff Partha, thank you. For me, the issue is time. If I could do this full time then no problem, I could action all the steps you outline. But with 2-3 hours a day available, at best, that's a big mountain to climb, especially when I am committed to other endeavours.
At the moment it's all about the parasite SEO for me. My informational articles on Medium are surviving the wrath of the mods it seems and that is sending traffic to my (dead HCU) website. I'm posting general news once a week on the site just to keep it active but other than that, I'm not really focussing my attention there.
Because I really have to make some money online, like yesterday and parasite SEO seems to be the way to do that, with the time I have available.
But thank you for sharing those steps - very useful to know for the future 😎
I have been starting to diversify a lot more. I have a few questions.
1. I have been starting to use Reddit a lot more, and I have been able to get a 125 karma so far. I remembered you saying I should get around a 500 or 1000 karma in total, right? Well, once I have that, what next?
2. Do you schedule out your Pinterest posts throughout the week, or all at once?
